When to replace the reverse osmosis membrane?

When we talk about maintenance of RO purifiers, the first thing that comes to mind is replacing the reverse osmosis membrane.

Why do I need to replace the RO membrane?

Filters and membranes need to be replaced periodically because contaminants in the water can deposit on the filter surface. After a period of time, the deposits will eventually clog the filter. This reduces the filtration capacity and lowers the quality of the water.

If your water purifier takes a long time to fill the tank, then you need to check the filters and membranes and replace them when needed.

If the filters are not replaced in a timely manner, impurities deposited on the filter surface may eventually be transferred to the purified water.

Clogged filters and membranes result in unnecessary power wastage because they reduce the purification capacity, i.e. the purifier has to run more time to purify the same amount of water.

In addition to wasted electricity, clogged RO membranes also result in more wasted water because clogged membranes produce more wastewater than a properly working RO membrane.

When should I replace my RO membranes?

The RO membrane is the most important part of any RO water purifier. the RO membrane is actually the filter that does all the work, the sediment filter and carbon filter just prepare the water for the RO membrane so it doesn't get damaged.

If you take care of the sediment and carbon filters and replace them at the required intervals, the RO membrane can be replaced after purifying only 4,000 to 6,000 liters of water.

RO membranes may die earlier or last longer, depending on the TDS of the input water. RO membrane replacement will depend on the amount of water used, the quality of the incoming water, and the efficiency of the sediment and carbon filters.

Typically, RO membranes last about 2-3 years, but we have seen them last up to 5 years. If you are using very hard water or if you have never flushed your membranes, your RO membranes may die prematurely.

The best way to know when to replace your RO membranes is to check the TDS level of your purified water. You will need a TDS meter like this one to find out the TDS level. If you don't already have one, we recommend that you purchase a digital TDS meter to easily find out what TDS is in your water.

You will know that your RO membrane is starting to deteriorate when the TDS starts to climb. This usually happens suddenly, as we recommend replacing the RO membrane every 2-3 years.

Please note: If the incoming water is hard or has a high TDS, the RO membrane may need to be replaced more frequently. You should always check the specifications of your RO purifier, or most accurately, the specifications of your RO membrane.
